Obituary

Bill is survived by his loving wife Velia "Belle" Garcia Bird of 69 years.  Four children: Linda Solano, Carol Carver (Robert Carver), Lorraine Williams & husband Kevin & Bill Bird & Tina Capello. A beautiful family of 14 grandchildren: Samuel Solano, James Solano, Victoria Solano, Alex Pena, Michael Pena, Erin Silva, Xavier Cardenas, Robbie Carver, Jordan Williams, Zachary Williams, Michelle Stewart, Shawn Williams, Billy Bird & Timothy Bird. Blessed with 12 great grandchildren with 4 more on the way, soon to be 16. All his grandchildren and great grandchildren affectionately called "Fatso" as babies.

Bill is survived by his sister Betty Bird Gutierrez & many loved nieces and nephews.

Bill was born and raised in Washington State until he joined the U.S. Air Force at age 18, where he was trained to be an aircraft mechanic. He was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX where he met & married Belle. He quickly became a loved member of the Garcia family. Bill served during the Korean War.

After serving in the Air Force he went on to aircraft maintenance in the private sector, entrepreneurship, education and then started his career in the medical field as a Registered Nurse. It took him 5 years of staying up nights studying at the dining room table, while working days to take care of his family. He proudly graduated from Southwest Texas State University. Starting his new medical career in his mid 40's. This change was a welcome blessing in his life, as he had found his passion. He came home from the hospital with many beautiful stories of those he cared for. He was a compassionate & loving nurse. Working on many floors including the Emergency Room but spending many years in Oncology.

Bill served his country in Korea, set a shining example with 32 years of sobriety, and in the end simply said "well…let's call it a day."  Bill's legacy will be that all things are possible through hard work and it's never too late to strike out on a new path and be who you were created to be.

Thank you to the care givers who respectfully helped us care for our father.
