Obituary

Trinidad Velez Bernal, born on June 22, 1921 in Helotes, Texas to Macario and Maria Velez, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of March 12, 2018.

She was a remarkable woman who worked in the pecan shelling factories with her widowed mother and her sisters during turbulent times.  The hard work and low wages did not embitter her; rather she learned to think and triumph over unimaginable odds.

Trine was widowed by Joe G. Bernal in 1975 after 32 years of marriage. She was a loving, kind person with strong convictions about how best to raise her four sons to become good citizens. Along with her husband, she created a nurturing environment, instilling in their sons to do their best in all endeavors, especially education. Thus, she was proud that all four graduated from college and hold advanced degrees.

Her knowledge of history and current events belied her sixth-grade formal education.  She read the daily paper cover to cover, enjoying columnists and comics alike.  She quickly solved the puzzles on the Wheel of Fortune.  An avid scrabble player, she frequently beat the college folks at the table.

Trine was preceded in death by her sisters, Juanita, Tomasita, and Epifania; and her brother, Antonio.

She is survived by her sons, Alexander (Isabel), David (Marie-Louise), George (Irene), and Roman; grandchildren, Carlota Shewchuk, Victoria Covarrubias, Catherine Rogers, Ryan, Fredric, and Tyson; 11 great grandchildren; and her sister, Maria Bueno.
