Tomas Arredondo, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas, went to rest in the arms of our Lord on November 30th, 2015, at the age of 78. He was born in Laredo, Texas on August 17, 1937 to Tomas Arredondo, Sr. and Berta Cornejo Arredondo. The third of seven children, he graduated from San Augustine High School in 1956, and then attended Laredo Junior College. He moved to Corpus Christi with his family in 1957, and then to San Antonio in 1961. He met the love of his life in San Antonio, and married Margaret Trejo in 1965. Tomas and Margaret had four children together, and were married for 50 years.
Tomas spent his life working at the family-owned bakery producing the best Mexican sweetbread ever. He started learning the family trade at the age of four by cracking eggs. By the age of six, he was rolling balls of dough for the delicious pan dulce. Although he worked the bakery in Laredo and Corpus Christi, he spent the majority of his life working at the famous Iris Bakery (1030 South Presa) in San Antonio, until the bakery closed in 1995 when he was 57 years old. Tomas was a third generation baker, following in the footsteps of his father, and maternal grandparents.
When Tomas wasn't working at the bakery, he could be found at the San Antonio Charro Ranch where he enjoyed spending many evenings and weekends. He was a Charro member for many years, and was a wonderful horseman who trained and rode his beautiful quarter horses. Tomas had so many interests and activities throughout his life—basketball in high school, coaching city league softball (while Margaret managed) their team "The Condors", fishing, woodworking, and family bar-b-ques and get-togethers. But most of all, and what everyone seems to remember, is how much he loved to make people laugh.
Tomas is survived by his wife, Margaret T. Arredondo; his children, Barbara A. Statler-Harris (Gary), Tomas Arredondo III, Margaret A. Klabunde (Kory), Francisco V. Arredondo (Jenny); his grandchildren, Jaclyn Garza, Vanessa Waag (Nick), Jennifer Statler, Tomas Arredondo IV, Tommy Olivas, Jordan Statler, Alyssa Olivas, Chrisha Harris, Elise Arredondo, Katherine Arredondo, Makayla Klabunde, Klarissa Klabunde; and his great-grandchildren (all boys), Evan Garza, Aiden Featherstone, Ray Garza, Nicholas Waag, Jacob Garza, and Colton Waag. His siblings include Hilda A. Flores (Julian), Sara A. Saenz (Alex), Sylvia A. Ramirez (Manolo), Sonia A Negrete (Luis), Sandra A. Mata (Alex), and Jose L. Arredondo.
