Sylvia "Hardy" Roque 83, of San Antonio, Texas was called home to be with her loved ones Friday, November 26, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Roy M. Roque, her sister, Laura Davila, her mother, and father.
She is survived by her sister Sandra Vazquez, her brother Jody Castano, daughter Rhonda C. Roque-Mata, son-in-law George Mata, Jr., granddaughters, Addison Jolie and Alysse Emery Mata, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved cat Nahla.
Sylvia Roque was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 30, 1937 to Jannie and Joe Castano. Sylvia is one of four siblings, Sandra Vazquez, Jody Castano, and Laura Davila. She married Roy on August 23, 1961 after he asked "let's give it a shot." She went home to get her stuff, while yelling to her mother in the other room, "I'll be back, I'm going to the courthouse to marry Roy." She and Roy established their business, Roque's Hubcap City, and ran it for over 30 years. She was a second mother to her brother, sisters, cousins and many others in her life, until after 18 years of marriage, several heartbreaks, and being told that she would not be able to have a child, she and Roy were blessed with their only child, Rhonda. Then, years later were blessed again when they became grandparents to two beautiful girls, who became their whole worlds. After Roy passed Sylvia said that it was her granddaughters that she lived for.
Sylvia enjoyed life through completing crossword puzzles, sharing stories of what she called her "covered wagon days," and hours of her favorite detective shows and "cowboy movies." She did all of this by the sides of her family. She is remembered for her stubbornness, relentless strength, love of her family, and delicious cooking.
On her last day, she said that she was going home to be with "mom, dad, and Laura."
