Sister Maura Scarry died peacefully at her home, the Convent of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, on November 16, 2023.  On Thursday afternoon, she quietly slipped away from the religious community which treasured her and the family whose love continually nurtured her into the waiting arms of God.

Sister Maura was born in Brierfield, Co. Galway, Ireland on September 18, 1930, the daughter of Michael and Catherine Scarry.  During her 70 years of religious life, she wove the sturdy threads of her loving yet hardworking early years into a tapestry of generosity for more than three generations of students and parents in Missouri, Texas, and Louisiana.  In 1952, Sister Maura arrived in San Antonio after a rough sea voyage and long train ride and began a ministry of teaching primary students that illuminated her life for the next 52 years. Her last 24 years of ministry were spent at Our Mother of Mercy School in Beaumont, Texas where she left a significant piece of her heart.  During her retirement years, she rocked babies at Healy Murphy Child Development Center and distributed clothes at CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry).

Sister Maura is mourned by her sister, Christina Loftus, her sister-in-law, Kitty Scarry, her niece and nephews, her religious community, and her friends. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 A.M on Saturday, November 18, 2023, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. She will be interred in the community cemetery. Services will be held at Holy Spirit Convent, 300 Yucca Street, San Antonio, Texas.
