Obituary

Sister John Martin Ebrom, CDP, (Mary Edith) entered eternal life on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at the age of 97 in McCullough Hall Nursing Center, San Antonio, Texas.  Mary Edith was born April 9, 1925 in La Vernia, Texas.  Her parents, Edward J. and Mary Ann (Klimitcheck) Ebrom decided to move to San Antonio when Mary Edith was two years old.  She was educated by the Sisters of Divine Providence at St. Joseph Academy in San Antonio, Texas.  For ten years, while attending Our Lady of the Lake College and St. Mary's Downtown College, she put aside her desire to become a woman religious in order to support her family.  She worked in San Antonio at the Express Printing Company's Complaint Department, at Santa Rose Hospital as a surgical secretary and medical recorder, and at the Archdiocese of San Antonio.  She answered God's call to become a Sister of Divine Providence, at age 26, on June 22, 1952 and professed first vows on June 22, 1953.

Sister John Martin's first ministry was as a teacher.  Soon after, her natural and meticulous financial talents were utilized when she served at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) as the Treasurer.  She had this role for 24 years.  This was followed by serving as OLLU's interim Vice-President of University Relations, then as the university's Development Director.  In 1981 she left OLLU to serve a six-year term as her Congregation's Treasurer. She attended the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California for one year before moving to Alexandria, Louisiana to serve as the Director of Catholic Community Services for the Diocese of Alexandria.  She returned to San Antonio 12 years later and became the Director of Crisis Intervention at Catholic Charities.  She was awarded the Lifetime Angel of Catholic Charites Achievement Award from the Archdiocese of San Antonio for her dedication, time, work and energy that strengthened the homeless prevention program.

Sister John Martin completed her Bachelor of Business Administration in 1954.  She proceeded to earn her two Master degrees, in Education and Counseling, and in Business Administration, from Our Lady of the Lake University.  However, she considered her greatest achievement to be working with the poor and the needy.  Her compassionate and giving heart always prevailed in all her roles.  She was a Christ-like example to follow.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty (Bohl) Ebrom, eight nieces and nephews, Kelly Ebrom Kennedy (Kevin), Lisa Ebrom Hanneman (Joel), Christy Ebrom Henley (Dan), Mary Jane Dreitner Upton, Victor Dreitner (Stacy), Caroline Dreitner Mowen (Curt), Cindy Dreitner Epley (Gregg), Anthony Dreitner (Kathy), numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews and the Sisters of Divine Providence.  She was preceded in death by her parents Edward J. and Mary Ann (Klimitcheck) Ebrom and brothers, Herman Ebrom and Charles Ebrom; and sister, Evelyn (Ebrom) Dreitner.
