Obituary

Everything happened fast as if God was in a hurry to have her with Him! Our sister Martha left us while she was enjoying a game of bingo with other residents of St. Francis Nursing Home in San Antonio, Texas. She left just as she was, simple, without last-minute complications, as one who was ready and prepared for God's embrace. The exact time? 3:00 p.m., the hour of Divine Mercy! Of course, the news of her death has left us saddened, but filled with immense peace: Martha is happy with Him forever, and we have an intercessor closer to God!

Martha used to speak fondly of her childhood in Tamarindo, in the province of Camagüey, Cuba, where she was born in 1937. After getting to know the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus at the College of Camagüey, she responded to the call of Jesus. Accepting the invitation of M. General, Pilar Suárez Inclán, in 1961, she entered the Society at the Novitiate in Tortosa, Spain. Since 1964, her life in the Society brought her to the Province of St. Francis de Sales and it has been a testimony to God's fidelity, to which she has always responded with generosity and dedication to the interests of Jesus.

She loved the classroom and enjoyed the schools where obedience sent her. She taught in Louisiana, Texas, and Nicaragua. At St. Teresa's Academy in San Antonio, Texas, she worked in the science labs and library, where students could always find an accurate answer to their questions.  In addition to her love of teaching, Martha put her gifts to work tirelessly as she responded with her a great sense of responsibility to the provincial offices and positions entrusted to her. She was Provincial Secretary from 1983 to 2006, Provincial Councilor, and Provincial Mission Coordinator. She will be missed for her tireless spirit of service, but above all, as a pillar of holiness, wisdom, and prudence in the province.

We entrust to her our new Province of Our Lady of Peace!
