Sister Maureen Finnerty, SHSp, died on January 15, 2021 at the Convent of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on May 10, 1926 in Newtown, Mountbellew, Co. Galway, Ireland, Sr. Maureen was the seventh of eleven children and the first of three Finnerty sisters to enter the congregation. She entered the community at the height of World War II and was professed in Ireland.
She came to the United States in 1946 on a plane with many German "war brides". She spent her teaching years in Mississippi and Texas and served as an administrator at St. Mary of Carmel School in Dallas and Little Flower School in San Antonio. She breathed into the schools where she served an atmosphere of respect and academic energy. She served the Motherhouse community as coordinator for several years and volunteered with Christian Assistance Ministry
(CAM). In the Motherhouse, she nourished a deep love of community and a willing spirit of service.
Sister Maureen is mourned by her sisters, Sister Anne Finnerty, SHSp (Zambia) and Joan Connaughton (Ireland), numerous nieces and nephews and her sisters in community.
Due to current circumstances surrounding COVID-19, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Motherhouse. Donations may be made in Sr. Maureen's memory to the ministries of the Sisters of Holy Spirit.
