Sister Mary Edward Alonzo, S.S.C.J., passed away on February 18, 2022, at the age of 85.

She was born on April 6, 1936, in San Benito, Texas, to Ascencion Alonzo and Fidela Zepeda.   She was baptized Maria Enriqueta Alonzo.  Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Emma Perez. She is survived by her brother, Ruben Roy Alonzo; her sister, Maria Guadalupe Casanova, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary Edward entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in San Antonio, Texas, on June 2, 1953. She professed her first vows on July 25, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas. She professed her final vows on July 26, 1961, in St. Jacut les Pins, FRANCE.

Sister graduated from Incarnate Word High School and received a B. A. degree from Our Lady of the Lake University.

Sister Mary Edward was an elementary school teacher. She taught in Catholic Schools in Texas in San Juan, San Benito, Houston, Del Rio, Austin, Floresville, and San Antonio. Sister taught at Our Lady of Sorrows School, Mount Sacred Heart School for Boys and St. Matthews School in San Antonio, Texas.

In her later years, she dedicated her life to prayer and service in her community. She spent her last few years as a resident of St. Francis Nursing Home in San Antonio, Texas. The Congregation is very grateful to the staff for their dedicated care.

FUNERAL SERVICES

Rosary will be recited on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  The celebration of the Mass of Resurrection will follow the Rosary at 2:30 P.M.
