Sister Rose Corrine Medica, CDP, entered eternal life on September 12, 2021 at the age of 92. She was born into a close-knit Italian family on January 6, 1929 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Her parents, Nicholas Peter and Corrine (Spera) Medica, both natives of Sicily in Italy, had eight children. Her baptismal name was Frances Mary.
Frances Mary was educated, K-12, by the Sisters of Divine Providence at St. Francis Xavier in Alexandria, Louisiana. She felt the yearning and quest for God during her junior year in high school. She answered God's call to become a Sister of Divine Providence on June 6, 1945. Sister Rose Corrine professed first vows on June 22, 1948 and began her ministerial life that same year.
Sister Rose Corrine earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Education from Our Lady of the Lake College, San Antonio, Texas. She was an elementary teacher for forty years. She taught throughout Louisiana (Bunkie, Natchitoches, Broussard, Shreveport, and Lafayette) for 28 years and in Texas for 12 years. She was the school principal of St. Cecilia School in Broussard, Louisiana from 1964 to 1970. She served her Congregation as the Personnel Director and Assistant Coordinator. Upon completion of this four-year role she obtained her certification in Religious Studies from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and certification in Gerontology from St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre, Haute, Indiana. She became the Director of Religious Education for St. Joseph Church in Iota, Louisiana in 1989. Seven years later she coordinated the Program for the Aging at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Sister Rose Corrine returned to Our Lady of the Lake Convent in 2003. She was of service to her fellow sisters and convent staff through her gentle presence, kindness and faith. She was a strong witness of total abandonment to Divine Providence during her last years of life.
She is survived by her siblings Paul (Lena) Medica, Sr., Jenny (Phillip) Carney, Sam (Bernice) Medica, numerous nieces and nephews and her fellow Sisters of Divine Providence. She was preceded in death by her parents Nicholas and Corrine Medica, siblings (in-laws): Mary (Dominic) Palermo, Josephine (Joe) Genova, Joseph Medica, and Rose (George) Warshaw.
