Obituary

Sister Monica Carroll, the 9th General Superior of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, died early on June 27, 2018.

She was born in Surrey, England, raised in Dublin, Ireland and spent her 69 years of religious life in generous ministry in Texas, Louisiana and Zambia. Her beautiful blue eyes always seemed focused on those whose circumstances had brought them to the margins.

As recently as last Wednesday, she was volunteering at Christian Assistance Ministry. In 1979, Sr. Monica began an initiative with the East Side Apostolate in San Antonio, a cooperation which later grew into the East Side Alliance and eventually evolved into Metro Alliance. During her tenure as General Superior, the congregation's rewritten constitution was approved and the community extended its presence to both Mexico and Zambia.

Also under her leadership, congregational land was donated to Habitat for Humanity. When she finished her term of office, she spent some time ministering with the Benedictine Sisters in Boerne and in 1993 she began her own ministry in the Western Province of Zambia where she served for the next 23 years.

Sister Monica is survived by her brothers, Paul (Teresa) and Phil (Mona), her sister, Gemma Carroll, and numerous relatives. She also leaves behind a religious community that she truly loved and, who in turn, truly loved her.
