Obituary

Sister Gabriel Ann Tamayo, MCDP, age 95, entered eternal rest on March 22, 2023 in San Antonio, TX.  She was born on March 23, 1927, to Gabriel Tamayo and Guadalupe Salinas in Lockhart, TX, and baptized the next day at St. Mary's Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Gabriel Tamayo, and her sisters, Mary Alice Jimenez and Eleanor Mireles. She is survived by her sister, Bertha Moreno of Dallas, TX, and brother, Hector Tamayo of New Braunfels, TX.

She entered the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence in San Antonio, on July 5, 1948. She entered the novitiate, March 23, 1949, made first vows, March 24, 1950 at Our Lady of the Lake chapel; she professed Triennial Vows, August 5, 1956 in MCDP Stella Maris Chapel.

Sister Gabriel Ann received a BA in Religious Studies at Our Lady of Lake University, and a master's degree in Spirituality from St. Mary's University, both in San Antonio.

Her service to her religious order marked several 'first's' as she was the first MCDP sent by the Congregation of Divine Providence (CDP), to Querétaro, Mexico to assist them with the vocations from Mexico; she was the first director of Postulants for MCDPs in 1963, and the first elected MCDP Superior General.  Her internal service continued as assistant to the Superior in 1980-84, and as director of formation/vocation ministry in 1984.

Her places of ministry as director of religious education took place in the Archdioceses of San Antonio and Galveston-Houston, and in the dioceses of Brownsville, Dallas, and Fresno, California. A vital service was her dedication and commitment as the archivist to the MCDPs. At the age of ninety-two, Sister Gabriel Ann brought her ministry as archivist to a close as she prepared to move to McCollough Hall-Skilled Facility.

Sister Gabriel Ann has left fond memories that her family, her MCDP sisters, MCDP Associates, former MCDPs, and friends in her places of ministry, will recall for years to come. Her demeanor was one that could command your attention, while on the other hand, it could make you laugh at her stories and jokes. She enjoyed needle work, photography, and fun and educational field trips. The many visitors she had throughout the years and recent days, give testimony of how she was loved and esteemed by friends and family.

On behalf of the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, we express our gratitude to the Congregation of Divine Providence for the care they provided Sister Gabriel Ann in her final years at their skilled facility. Our condolences go to her family and friends. The services for her will be take place at the same address.
