It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Sister Mary Angela Murdaugh.  Sister Angela was born on September 15, 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas.  She passed on October 11, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.   Sister Angela Murdaugh served the Lord as a Franciscan Sister of Mary from 1972 until her passing.

In 1983, Sister Angela Murdaugh along with three other sisters founded Holy Family Services as a community clinic in the Rio Grande Valley. Holy Family Services provided safe family-centered maternity care for women in the community.  For her work, Sister Angela was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of her leadership and service to the impoverished families in the border region.

After retiring from the Holy Family Services, Sister Angela played a key leadership role in the Journey to Damascus, an ecumenical retreat ministry of volunteer Catholic and Protestant men and women, who were committed to serving and supporting the community in growing their personal relationship with God.

Later in life, Sister Angela became active in the Kairos Prison ministry helping incarcerated men, women and youth, as well as their families, to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.

Sister Angela was preceded in death by her parents, George Earl and Mary Angela (nee Graviss) Murdaugh.  She is survived by her sisters Kathleen Stillman, Anita Henson, Patty Mengen, Nancy Hammack, Diane Harrington, and Judy Lindsey, as well as her brothers George Murdaugh and Danny Murdaugh.

The funeral will be held at the Chapel of Incarnate Word, 4503 Broadway in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Starting at 10:00 A.M., there will be a wake for an hour prior to funeral; anyone present may say a few words.

All friends and family are welcome.  There will be a reception following the funeral Mass at the Heritage Hall behind the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, Sister Angela suggested donations for either Holy Family Services (5819 N FM 88 Weslaco, TX 78599), Kairos Coleman Unit (PO Box 54, Lockhart, TX 78644), or the American College of Nurse-Midwives (409 12th St SW Suite 600, Washington DC 20024-2188).

Rest in peace our beloved sister and friend.  You remain in our hearts always.
