Sister Canice Walsh, CSB, entered eternal life on August 25, 2014 at the age of 89. She was born Catherine Mary Walsh on April 15, 1925 in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, the oldest of three daughters born to Thomas and Mary (Lyster) Walsh. She attended a Brigidine Secondary School, close to her rural farm home, and on St. Brigid's Day, February 1, 1945, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Brigid (Brigidine Sisters) and professed first vows on August 24, 1947. After five years of study at University College Dublin, and a brief teaching career in Ireland, she was one of the six Brigidine pioneers to come to San Antonio, Texas in 1953. Throughout her years of ministry Sister Canice was a teacher and/or principal at schools in San Antonio (Saint Paul, Saint Luke, Saint Pius X) and at Our Lady of the Assumption in Beloit, Wisconsin. In addition she served the community in leadership roles. When she retired from school she took up a new ministry as the Director of Social Ministry for Saint Brigid Parish and later as a home companion for Christian Senior Services. Sister Canice was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mary Walsh and her brothers-in-law, Paddy Drennan and Padraig Lennon. She is survived by her two sisters in Ireland, Dolly Lennon and Rita Drennan, and by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and by several other relatives and friends in Ireland. Here in San Antonio, she will be dearly missed by her Brigidine Sisters and Brigidine Associates, especially her own Associate Group, and by many colleagues in ministry, past-students, parents and friends. The Brigidine Community, and her family, would like to extend their very sincere gratitude to the Sisters of Divine Providence, and to all the Staff at McCullough Hall Nursing Center, who took such wonderful care of Canice over the past almost six years, and treated her as one of their own. We also thank Christus VNA Hospice for their comforting care of Canice as her health declined. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 27 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Saint Brigid's Convent, 5118 Loma Linda Drive; and at 6:00 p.m. at Saint Paul Catholic Church, 350 Sutton Drive, with a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, August 28 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery following the liturgy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McCullough Hall Retirement Center, Sisters of Divine Providence, 603 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, TX 78207.
