Sister Virgil (Virgilius) Fogarty, CSB, entered eternal life on Friday, October 13, 2023. She was born in Drominagh, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland on September 21, 1930 to Denis and Annie O'Meara Fogarty. She grew up on the family farm with her parents and three siblings, all of whom have preceded her in death.
Following her secondary education at a Brigidine School, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Brigid (Brigidines) and made her first vows on August 28, 1951. Her first three years of ministry were spent in Windsor, England. In 1954, just one year after the original six Brigidines came to Texas and Saint Paul School, Sr. Virgil joined them here in San Antonio.
Over the years she was a teacher at Saint Brigid's Kindergarten, Saint Paul School and Saint Luke School. Later on she trained in Clinical Pastoral Education and took up roles in Pastoral Care both at Santa Rosa and St. Luke Baptist Hospitals. In later years she continued to minister as a volunteer with VITAS Hospice and at the Benitia Family Center until her health required her to move to McCullough Hall Nursing Home at Our Lady of the Lake.
Sr. Virgil is survived by nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends in Ireland, as well as friends, co-workers, and past-students in Windsor and San Antonio. She will be deeply missed by her Brigidine Sisters and their associates.
We want to extend our very sincere gratitude to the administration, nurses, and staff of McCullough Hall, for their compassionate and dedicated care of Virgil in recent years.
