Sister Evelyn O'Flaherty died peacefully at her home, Convent of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, in San Antonio, Texas, on June 9, 2023. The daughter of Michael and Catherine O'Flaherty, Evelyn was born in Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland.  She relished the distinction of being from the same part of Ireland as Mother Margaret Mary Healy Murphy, her congregation's foundress. Throughout her 69 years of religious life, there was hardly a day when Sr. Evelyn did not speak of Kerry's beautiful beaches and its surrounding mountains.  Despite her nostalgia for her birthplace, she plunged wholeheartedly into ministry in a land far from the salty air of the Atlantic coast.

Sister Evelyn spent 36 years of very active ministry as a teacher and administrator in seven Catholic schools: six in Texas and one in Mississippi. She also worked in parish social apostolate in South Louisiana.  In 1990, after completing a sabbatical, Sr. Evelyn suffered a brain aneurysm and for the next 33 years, she lived at the Motherhouse negotiating limited mobility and vision impairment.

Sister Evelyn is mourned by her sisters, Nora Lynch, Joan Smyth, Sheila Vitale, Sister Peggy O'Flaherty, SHSp, her nieces and nephews, her friends, and by her religious community.

FUNERAL SERVICES

June 13, 2023

A Rosary will be recited at 12:00 noon

followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 P.M.

at the Motherhouse Chapel

300 Yucca Street, San Antonio, Texas

Interment will follow in the community cemetery
