Obituary

Sister Marion Morua, MCDP, age 81, entered eternal rest on July 22, 2023, at McCullough Hall Nursing Facility in San Antonio, TX. She was born July 4, 1942, to Juan Morua and Herminia Valdez in Port Arthur, TX, and baptized Elaine Ronnie on September 20, 1942, at OLG in Port Arthur. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, John Angelo Morua, Jr., Yolanda Morua, Mark Morua, and Johnnie Ann Morua Hebert. She is survived by siblings Laurie Morua Rajha, and Norman Morua.

She entered the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence in San Antonio, August 28, 1963.  She made first vows on August 6, 1965, and professed final vows on August 6, 1970, at St. Andrew's Stella Maris Chapel. She received studies at Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, and participated in certificate courses on Spiritual Gerontology, Evangelization/Catechetics.

Sister Marion requested in writing that our community keep her obituary brief. With respect to her wishes, and still in line with our community tradition, the following paragraphs are written without elaboration as a testimonial of God's good deeds accomplished through her.  As best said in the daily prayer of one of our MCDPs: "Gracious Holy One, I praise you and I thank you for your sacred gift of being the handiwork of your hands. Awesome and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139).

Throughout her 59 years of service, Sister Marion applied her God-given skills in various settings and places, at times returning to the same diocese to do a different ministry. Her preparation was in Catechetics, social services, and chaplaincy, as she served in Texas, New Mexico, California, in Germany, in a three-month catechetical program at a US Army Base, in Wisconsin, in a summer program for Migrant workers, and in Arizona to the Tohono O'odham Nation. Upon return to CA, she did chaplaincy outreach at the State Hospital and to the Tule Indian Reservation in Porterville.  Sister Marion did both elected and assigned MCDP internal Ministry, as Councilor, Vocation/Formation Director, and Coordinator at St. Andrew's Convent. It's good to note that she was a member of our MCDP Constitutions Committee that worked on this important work for five years while employed.

Before full retirement, she did part-time chaplaincy in San Antonio at Morning Side Manor Nursing Home, and downtown Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. In full retirement, she did volunteer ministry for retired Oblate priests, and was a driver for our elders at St. Andrew's Convent. During her recent residency at OLL St. Joseph's Hall, she was missioned to coordinate monthly prayer sessions for our MCDPs at Regan and McCullough Hall until God took her home on July 22nd.

It is our hope that this bit of background on Sister Marion describes who she was without a lot of detail. Not everything can be said about a person because we grow and change physically and spiritually in the context of life experiences. Sister Marion was known to be a private and
reserved person; to others, she was known to light up in settings related to her ministries or they enjoyed outdoor adventures with her in earlier years. She shared her Native American heritage at prayer services that she prepared for our community gatherings, and most assuredly with the
people she served, especially in the reservations.

On behalf of the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, we express our condolences to the Morua Family, and gratitude to them, and to the Congregation of Divine Providence and Staff at McCullough for the care given to Sister Marion. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
