Obituary

Sister Laura Melody died peacefully on November 4, 2016 at her home, the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate. She was 94 years old. She was born in County Galway, Ireland on October 26, 1922. She joined the Sisters of the Holy Spirit in Mount Bellew, County Galway and came to Texas just prior to the outbreak of World War II in Europe. For many years Sister Laura served as a teacher and/or principal in several of the schools staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After completing her studies at Harvard University in 1976, she joined the faculty at St. Philip's College where she taught English for approximately 25 years. Not only was Sister Laura a diligent teacher, striving for excellence in herself and her students, she was also an avid advocate with city agencies on behalf of the people who lived and worked with her for the development of the Eastside Community. Throughout the 1980's, she was involved with Habitat for Humanity on the Westside and persistently urged for its expansion to San Antonio's Eastside. For several years, she served consecutive 3 year terms on its Board of Directors. Sister Laura is survived by her sister, Ita, brother in law, nieces, nephew, other relatives, the members of her religious congregation, many friends, and former coworkers and students.
