Sister Mary Florence Volz, CDP, (baptized Mary Annis) entered eternal life on April 29, 2019 at the age of 92. She was born on December 25, 1926 in Mission, Texas to Alphons Francis and Olivia Katherine (Massey) Volz. She professed first vows as a Sister of Divine Providence on June 22, 1948. Sister Mary Florence's life was a melody of joy, love and appreciation for all of God's creation.
Music was her life's passion and source of joy and inspiration. This was evident in the way she lived her life, instructed her piano and organ students, and how she taught music. She encouraged her students to venture beyond the notes and rhythm and "express the sounds, the phrase and how the music feels." She enjoyed instructing the second generation of students and imagined her joy to be similar to that of a grandmother watching her grandchildren's achievements. She prayed that her students would continue to use their gifts in music for the honor and glory of God, in service to the Church, community and world.
Sister Mary Florence earned a Bachelor of Music from the St. Louis Institute of Music and a Masters of Music from the University of Michigan. She spent nine months in Rome at Villa Achillia with the Focolare (the Work of Mary) Movement. She loved being a Sister of Divine Providence. Her spirituality, her outlook on life and her positive personality echoed this appreciation.
She is survived by her sibling Marlene Vos, and all her Sisters of Divine Providence. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents Alphons Frances and Olivia Massey Volz and siblings (respective spouses): Marvin (and Kathleen) Volz, Millicent (and Arthur) Z. Van Deventer, (Dick) Richard (and Fosteene) Volz and brother in law Russell Vos.
