Sister Mary Felice Mojica, MCDP, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the age of 92. She was born to Cresencio Mojica and Petra Villarreal in Lockhart, TX, on January 30, 1930, and baptized five months later on June 29 as Martina Mojica, at St. Philip of Jesus Church in San Antonio.
She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings; Blas Mojica, Benita M. Castro, Epifania M. Ancira, Petra M. Zendejas, Pedro Mojica, and Sabina M. Cardenas. She leaves behind her sisters, Rosa M. Montoya and Tomasa M. Guerra and numerous nephews and nieces.
Martina joined the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence (MCDP) at the age of sixteen on June 2, 1946, and took the name, Sister Mary Felice, professing her final vows on August 5, 1954, in Stella Maris Chapel of St. Andrew's Convent in San Antonio. She served her congregation on its second elected Administrative Council in 1972, a four-year term. Her ministry assignments as religious educator and pastoral associate encompassed parishes throughout Texas: San Antonio, Rosenberg, Pasadena/Houston, Sugarland, Dallas, Mercedes, Brownsville, Port Lavaca, Fort Stockton, and one year in Las Cruces, NM.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio and her Master of Religious Education from St. Thomas University in Houston. She took a sabbatical in Concordia, KS in 2005. While serving at St. Pius in Pasadena/Houston with Sister Frances Jean Terrazas of Fort Stockton, she co-authored and published a teaching manual, Beginning a Journey, for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children. Her enthusiasm and hard work touched the lives of those with whom she ministered for over seventy years.
Although retirement from employed ministry inevitably arrived, Sister enthusiastically accepted volunteer ministry at Sacred Heart Parish in Conroe, TX, at the invitation of the pastor and good friend, Father Philip Wilhite, Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston, whom she knew since his seminary years. Until her death in 2014, Sister Mary of the Angels Rodriguez, MCDP, accompanied her. Sister Mary Louise Hernandez, MCDP, joined Sister Felice a few weeks later. Through their years of visiting the sick and working in the food pantry, the parishioners embraced them with daily loving care until both knew it was time to come home to St. Andrew's in January of 2020.
Sister Felice's passion for service continued at McCullough Skilled Nursing Facility owned by the Congregation of Divine Providence where she spent the last year of her life. Not always conscious of safety regulations, she took it upon herself to answer the doorbell to welcome visitors and to assist an elderly resident to the chapel for daily mass. Two weeks prior to her death, she gave a moving testimonial during a vocation gathering at OLLU. The McCullough community came to enjoy her friendly manner and warm smile. Her favorite pastime was working on puzzles and relaxing to the music of her CD collection. She thoroughly enjoyed going out to shop and eat with family and friends who also kept her well supplied with her favorite candies and popcorn that she readily shared.
It appears that our loving God granted her expressed wish, to leave this world quickly when the time came; and so, she did, saying to friends on Monday, "See you on Friday for arts and crafts."
On behalf of the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, we express our gratitude for the love and support extended to Sister Felice by her family, her employers, religious and the laity with whom she ministered for over seventy years, and to the Congregation of Divine Providence for the care provided during her residency at McCullough Hall.
Sister Mary Felice will be greatly missed!
