Mrs. Sheila Justine Gibbons Carrola age 61, of San Antonio passed away on Saturday September 27, 2025. She was born August 1, 1964 to James and Teresa Gibbons of Detroit, Michigan.
Sheila served 4 years active duty with the U.S. Army as a communication specialist, and was deployed to Grenada. After being honorably discharged she worked briefly for government agencies at Fort Ord California and Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Because she loved children and missed her nephews and nieces in Detroit, she enjoyed work as a teacher's assistant in both public elementary and Catholic parochial schools, even though she had earned her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Sheila was an avid gardener and loved growing all sorts of plants. She also enjoyed spectator sports and was a big fan of Detroit sports teams and the University of Michigan football team. Living in Texas she also became a Texas Ranger baseball fan. Not one to sit all the time, she also participated in single adults volleyball where she met her future spouse.
Sheila was a very social person and at times belonged to various cultural and social organizations. She was quick to make friends and had many. Sheila loved music and dancing, playing cards with her lady friends, and planning and participating in any celebration, especially if it was for a family member, friend, or even a friend of a friend, as long as it would make someone happy. Basically she enjoyed life and helped others enjoy theirs.
Sheila was strong in her faith and was a devout Catholic who had communion brought to her at home when she no longer had the strength to attend mass.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 27 years, Thomas Carrola; sister-in- law, Elizabeth Carrola; brother-in-law Fr. Rudy Carrola; step daughter, Amy Carrola; brothers, Patrick Gibbons, Dennis Gibbons, John Gibbons; sisters, Katy Gibbons, Annie Miller, Eilleen Gutierrez, and their wives and husbands, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
