Obituary

Rodriguez - Rudolph "Rudy" Torres, peacefully passed away from natural causes and entered the loving arms of our Lord on February 10, 2021, at the age of 94. He was born on August 08, 1926 in Wharton, Texas to Petra Rodriguez.

Rudy attended Sidney Lanier High School where he also played football.   He graduated early from high school and enlisted into the U.S. Navy with an age waiver at 16 years of age.  Rudy served as a cook on the anti-submarine Destroyer escort ship, the USS England from December 1944-December 1946.  After the war, he used the GI bill to attend college at the University of Texas at Austin.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from UT's College of Pharmacy.  After college, Rudy worked at Walgreens and Sommer's Drug Stores for a couple of years, then he bought his own pharmacy on the southside of town and called it, Mission Pharmacy, which was right across the street from Mission San Jose.  Rudy loved interacting with his customers, dispensing medicine and building some lifelong friendships during the 52 years that he owned Mission Pharmacy. Anyone who knew him knew that he liked his little yellow Volkswagen beetle.  If his yellow beetle was parked in front of the pharmacy, you could bet he was there which was usually 6 days a week.  The surrounding community fully supported his pharmacy, and it would not have thrived without Rudy at the helm, joking or carrying on conversations and sharing coffee with any and all of his customers at the soda fountain he had in the pharmacy.  Rudy had a busy schedule but always found time to spend with his family and take them on trips to California to visit extended family or to the Gulf coast for the weekend.  Rudy and his wife were avid travelers and had been to Europe many times, they traveled to Mexico, and the Caribbean, as well as many US destinations. He loved big band and all types of music, watching the Texas Longhorns play football and he was a big James Bond fan! He liked being with his family and being involved with the church and was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Ministry. Rudy was a very generous and giving man.  He loved helping others pursue their dreams of completing their education.  He was a mentor for many of the local future Pharmacy tech students that attended programs from McCullum High School and Harlandale High School and several pursued the Pharmacy license and Pharmacy tech licenses after being mentored by Rudy.

Rudy was preceded in death by his mother, Petra Rodriguez and his daughter, Melinda Ann Rodriguez.  Rudy will always be remembered by his loving wife of 69 years, Susana (Tello) Rodriguez.  He is survived by his son, David Rodriguez and his three children with Maureen: Billy, Brant & Bennett. Also surviving is daughter Yvonne Marie Prot and her husband Alain Prot with their two children: Dr. Emilie Prot, & Claire. Also surviving, son, Steven Rodriguez and his two children with Gina Reese: Stephanie & Christina.  Surviving daughter, Deanna Sue Andes, and her husband John Andes with their four children: Catherine, John Jr., Patrick & Michael.  Rudy has one great granddaughter, Emersyn and numerous sister-in laws and brother-in laws, nieces, nephews. Rudy 'Mr. Rod' will be missed by all the Pharmacists, Pharmacy Techs, and employees he had over the many years at Mission Pharmacy.
