Obituary

Ruben Alphonso Cortez was born on October 1, 1957, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 17, 2024.

Ruben began his career in the family-owned business, "The Villa Fontana," where he worked as a DJ for various social events. During his college years, he was actively involved in the Radio-Television-Film (RTF) program at KSYM, KRTU, and KTSA radio stations.

He dedicated several decades to USAA, starting from the mail room and advancing to the role of IT manager. Ruben played a vital role in establishing USAA's Auto Buying Services. Later, he transitioned to the real estate industry, achieving his dream as the broker and owner of Cortez Realty.

Ruben was a talented photographer, generously capturing special moments for family and friends. An avid outdoorsman, he loved spending time by the ocean in Rockport, TX, often seen with a fishing rod in one hand and a cool beverage in the other. He was also a world traveler, with a particular fondness for cruising.

Ruben was known for his kindness and generosity, always willing to help others, whether he knew them or not. He was the life of the party, enjoying singing, dancing, and bringing joy to gatherings. He proudly portrayed Santa Claus at annual Christmas Eve family celebrations and made appearances at nursing homes. A devoted sports fan, he loved college football, the Dallas Cowboys, and the San Antonio Spurs. Ruben was a lifelong resident of San Antonio and eagerly anticipated Fiesta each year, volunteering at events like NIOSA and St. Mary's Oyster Bake.

Ruben attended St. Gerard's Catholic Elementary and High School, where he discovered his love for theater, participating in numerous Broadway productions. He continued to support the arts as a proud season member of the Majestic Broadway Series for over 30 years. He graduated Cum Laude with a BA from the University of the Incarnate Word.

In his faith, Ruben served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at San Francesco Di Paola Catholic Church and was a member of the San Francescani Society. He was also a Master Mason and an active member of the Alzafar Shrine, as well as a long-time member of the Petroleum Club of San Antonio, TX.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Ruben participated in clinical trials at MD Anderson, hopeful that his contributions would help find a cure. He fought bravely until the very end.

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, Carmen and Raoul Cortez (the founder of KCOR, the first Spanish-speaking radio station in the U.S., and the first TV station aimed at Hispanic audiences), and his brother, Lauro Bustamante. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Louise; his sisters, Mary Carmen Rodriguez (Ceasar), Sylvia Botts (Leland), and Eloise Cortez-Lara (Javier); three daughters; nine grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
