Obituary

After battling a cancer that she did not know she had, Rozlynn Jan Johnson died on November 3, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 62. She leaves behind her daughter Angelique Peyton Howard and husband Shundrick, and their children Jazmyn, Victor Caelum, Darian and Autumn; her daughter Bree Lucas and husband Sam and their children Faith, Rowan and Tyler; her son Tristan Peyton and his fiancé Deirdre and their children Kyra, Blaec, Rowan, Doyle and Miley; and her son, Kerric Peyton and his wife Kelly and their children Jake, Case and Shaelin and her grandchildren Christopher and Jariah Szust. In addition she leaves behind her sister Donna Miller and her best friends Dave "Davie Boy" Logan and Kathleen "Bunny" McCarthy whom she adored and her lifelong friend Thomas Caldwell. She also leaves behind countless dear family members and friends who she loved dearly. Jan was born on May 31, 1953 in Waco, Texas, to parents Edward and Anne Johnson, who preceded her in death. She grew up in a large family with three sisters and five brothers. She was a natural giver and her most endearing characteristic, as observed by those close to her, was that no one loved others better than she did. Her love was the kind of love described in 1 Corinthians 13. She loved holidays and all of their traditions especially Thanksgiving, a large family get together. She was the matriarch of her large family. To say she was a dedicated grandmother and mother would be an understatement. She was the very best. Her children and grandchildren were her most prized treasures. She gave all that she had to those she loved and she gave abundantly the most valuable thing she had, her time. Her time was worth more than silver and gold and she gave it abundantly often doing selfless acts in the process. When some people would begin to tire after hours or days she would jump in and help people for weeks at a time and she did it with a smile and with the kind of love that she was so good at giving. Unconditional love. Jan grew up in a military family traveling across the United States and abroad. Her father Edward was an officer and a pilot in the United States Air Force who reached the rank of Colonel before passing away when she was only 14 years old. In her early years she spent time in what would become one of her favorite places in the world, England. She carried childhood memories from England with her for the rest of her life and it became a part of who she was. She loved to reminisce about the wonderful highlights of her life. She was an amazing story teller and she bonded as closely as a grandmother can bond with her grandchildren while telling them many wonderful stories. She ignited their imaginations and encouraged them to dream big. Jan was an avid reader and loved to read whatever book she could get her hands on. She loved the mountains, a colorful seasonal change in the fall, flowers and gardens, especially pansies. She loved the Texas hill country and dreamed of living there one day. She didn't like the beach and she hated snakes! Jan was a very strong and determined woman who struggled with and tried to push through the pain of advanced cancer for over a year thinking it was the periodic and intense neck pain that she had learned to live with for many years. She was so strong that until 3 weeks ago she didn't know she had cancer. Even as early as a month ago she was selflessly giving her time to care for another dear family member who needed her help. She loved caring for others and did it better than anyone else. Jan was a very spiritual person and in the weeks before her death she invited Jesus into the process as her personal lord and savior and asked Him on many occasions to take her home to Him. She was greatly comforted by the Catholic Priests and Eucharistic Ministers who spent time with her daily during the last two weeks of her life offering her blessings, prayer and daily communion. Jan's legacy is in her children and grandchildren who were mentioned above all of which she is survived by. In addition she is survived by her brothers Edward, Ron and Shawn; her sisters Donna (who had a very special place in her life and in her heart), Anne and Karal and numerous nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members who were like nieces and nephews to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; Edward and Anne Johnson; her brothers Dennis and Kevin Johnson; and her step-son Jeffery Szust. Jan didn't have a preference on how she would be put to rest and said that she wanted what those mourning her loss wanted at that time. There will be a viewing and funeral service Saturday, November 7, 2015 at The Angelus Funeral Home. The viewing will be at 3:00pm with funeral services at 4:00pm with a reception at her daughter Bree's house to follow. All are welcome. Her ashes will be interred in a private service with immediate family at a later date. The family would especially like to thank Dave Logan, Jan's dedicated friend and advocate, for the many hours and days that he spent caring for and advocating for her in the hospital and hospice center who acted more like a brother in the end than a friend; the staff of University Hospital and Gentiva Hospice Center for their constant, attentive treatment; and The Angelus Funeral Home, for making the arrangements. Flowers may be sent to The Angelus Funeral Home Saturday, before 3pm.
