Rev. Ronald William Walker, OMI, born in Detroit, Michigan on March 14, 1935 died in San Antonio, Texas on February 9, 2018 at the age of 83 years.
Fr. Walker entered St. Peter's Novitiate on February 21, 1954 in Mission, Texas and professed vows as a member of the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate on May 31, 1955. Fr. Walker completed his studies in philosophy and theology at De Mazenod Scholasticate in San Antonio. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1961 at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, TX.
Fr. Walker's first priestly assignment was to the Southern U.S. Province in Mexico but while awaiting papers, he received a "temporary" assignment at St. Anthony's which became permanent. He remained there for seven years until 1969. He was appointed Novice Master at St. Peter's Novitiate in Sarita, TX and later Superior and Rector of St. Anthony's. He enjoyed parish work as Assistant Pastor at Mary Immaculate Parish in Dallas. Fr. Walker credits 1975 as the year that changed his life as a priest and religious. He visited the Holy Land and gained a deeper spiritual experience of the privilege of being a priest, a missionary and a member of a missionary congregation.
After becoming Pastor at Immaculate Conception in Denham Springs, LA, and later Vocation and Formation Director in San Antonio, he was sent to Zambia in 1986 where he followed his missionary calling to a foreign land and founded the Formation Program in Zambia. He was the first Formation Director and remained involved as Pre-Novitiate Director until 2004. He was also the first Pastor of Mary Immaculate in Lusaka. Fr. Walker was very instrumental with the success of the Oblate Delegation of Zambia in regard to vocations and recruitment.
Fr. Walker will be remembered with respect and esteem by his Oblate brothers and all the people who were recipients of his pastoral care.
