Robert Fox Landholt, age 92, passed away on June 11, 2016 with family members at his side. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Bob started playing the trumpet at an early age and was considered a musical prodigy. At age 17, he was playing professionally and traveling cross-country from New York to California with dance bands, including the Al Donahue Orchestra. Bob also appeared in the 1944 short film, "Harmony Highway."
After two years on the road, Bob auditioned and was accepted to The Juilliard School of Music in New York City on full scholarship. He studied there for three years and was a trumpeter for the New York Brass Ensemble, during which time he met his future wife, Nancy Owen Griffin, also a Juilliard student. In 1949, they married at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in San Antonio (Nancy's home town) and then moved to Ohio where he played with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and was a faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Bob and Nancy returned to Texas permanently in 1952 when an opportunity came available with the San Antonio Symphony and remained residents of Monte Vista for most of their 61 years together and until Nancy's death in 2010.
In addition to symphony work, Bob also played weekends at the Roaring '20s Dance Club on Blanco Road – a nightclub opened in the early 1900s which hosted Big Band and Jazz musicians from across the country. In the early 1960s, Bob stopped playing professionally and opened the Conn Organ Center, selling Conn organs and offering lessons… Bob also started San Antonio's first "Yamaha Music School." When Nancy's father (David Griffin) retired, Bob assumed management of the Griffin Piano Company and eventually retired himself in the mid-1970s.
Even in retirement, music continued to be a part of Bob's daily life… for many years, he volunteered at St. Francis Nursing Home - playing the piano during "sing-a-long" time with the residents and staff. Bob never had a piano or organ lesson but was accomplished at both - his mother played the piano so talent was in his genes. Bob was a natural-born teacher, mentor, and entertainer. For 10+ years, Bob and Nancy volunteered their time directing/singing in the choir at Our Lady of Grace Church ("OLG") where they were life-time parishioners. And until a few weeks before he passed away, Bob volunteered in OLG's business office and participated in OLG's Perpetual Adoration Society. If you were celebrating a special occasion - especially a birthday – you were treated to a trumpet serenade personalized just for you. Bob made everyone feel extra special when he played his "ax."
One of four sons born to Conrad and Marcella Fox Landholt, sports was also a part of his life… baseball was king and the St. Louis Cardinals were always a favorite. He also enjoyed watching Spurs' games and could often be spotted riding his bike along Main Avenue and/or McCullough – going back-n-forth from daily Mass or volunteer activities at OLG.
To know Bob was to know his strong faith in God and devotion to the Catholic Church, his love of family and friends, his incredible musical talent, and a wonderful spirit of volunteerism. Bob enjoyed good food and drink and his love of ice-cream was legendary. He also had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. Bob's obituary wouldn't be complete with sharing three of his favorites:
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by brother, Gerald Landholt, and son-in-law Stephen Birgel IV. He is survived by his children Barbara Birgel, Teresa "Terry" Landholt, Nicholas "Nick" & Lacey Landholt, Karen Landholt, Christine & Walter Spencer, and Margaret "Daisy" Power. His grandchildren are Stephanie & Carl Davison, Deborah Birgel, Nicholas, Jr., Robert & Joseph Landholt, and Michael & Elizabeth Spencer. His great-grandchildren are Alyssa, Isabella, Bailey & Brody. Bob is also survived by brothers Howard Landholt and Thomas Landholt, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
