Obituary

Roberto Curiel Galvan was received by the Lord on November 30 th , 2020.

Born on October 30 th , 1929, in Raymondville, Texas, to the late Guadalupe and Maria Galvan, Robert lived an extraordinary life that was always guided by his unfaltering commitment to the Catholic Church and his family.  He married the love of his life on September 13 th , 1953, the late Annie Aguilar Galvan, who preceded him in death on December 2 nd , 1998.  Together they raised six children: Robert A. Galvan (Belinda), Sandra A Posada (Fernando), Hector A. Galvan, Gloria G. Stevens (Jeff), Teresa G. Pena (Michael), and Martha A. Galvan.  He was blessed to have 15 grandchildren:  Christopher (deceased), Elizabeth, George, Leslee, James Robert, Christine, Cameron, Robert III, Sarah, Michael, Karisa, Amalia, Amanda, Alex, and John Robert.  His 19 great-grandchildren brought him much joy.  He is survived by his last remaining brother, Manuel Galvan (Mary), and by his sisters-in-law, Esperanza Flores and Aurora Rocha, as well as his numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who felt like family.

Robert proudly served our nation as a U.S. Marine and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in the Korean Conflict.  After he was honorably discharged, he made his home in San Antonio where he had a long and distinguished civil service career at Kelly Air Force Base.

In 1976, Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio was the first U.S. partner affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and built the first Habitat home in the United States.  It was Robert's distinct honor and privilege to serve on the board that selected the recipient of that first Habitat home and to be the one who blessed that home when it was first occupied.

In 1977 he was ordained a Deacon for the Archdiocese of San Antonio and for the next 38 years he served at Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, on the Westside, until 2015.

Robert's family and friends knew not to talk to him during Cowboys and Spurs games, but they were always welcomed to sit and watch the game with him.  He would teach anyone around him to play dominoes just so he could beat them.  His family knew they could turn to him anytime they needed the wisdom of his counsel.  In his 91 years on this earth, he shared his love, wisdom, and laughter with all who knew him.  His grandchildren will always remember his sense of humor and the immense pride he had for them.  He asked his family to share with each other the great love they had for him, and that's how we shall always honor his memory.  He will be deeply missed and his memory always cherished.
