Obituary

In loving memory of Richard Lloyd who peacefully passed away on April 20, 2024, at the age of 63.  Richard was known by his family and friends as "Richie" and was born the son of an Airforce family on October 27, 1960, in Molesworth, England.  He lived with his family in England as well as El Paso, Austin and San Antonio.  Even though the family lived in many places, he chose to call San Antonio his home.  Richard attended and graduated from Luther Burbank High School and received a bachelor's degree from Our Lady of The Lake University.  He dedicated 17 years of his life to working at Kelly Air Force Base as a Civil Servant-sheet metal mechanic.  After the base closed, he went to work for the Edgewood School district as a librarian and then later worked at USAA as a Bank Service Member until he lost his sight.  After undergoing several surgeries to save his vision, he went to work for The Lighthouse for the Blind as a sander for aircraft floorboards under an Air Force contract. This brought him back full circle to once again be able to work with his hands on aircraft, as he so much loved to do.

As a young man he had a passion for cars, especially racing them or being part of the crew for his friends, while they raced.  As he got older, he developed an interest in fishing and the organization of fishing trips for his friends.  Telling jokes and listening to new ones made him happy as well as the love to barbecue and eating good food.  These were some of the hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment throughout his life, although, his greatest love was spending time with his four grandsons, while playing "Grandpa jungle gym" and allowing them to crawl all around him.  He also dedicated his time to reading books to the boys as they would bring them to him, but because he couldn't see the words, he would make up a story.  The boys would then enjoy correcting him because they knew the story and the pictures did not match.

Unfortunately, Richard did not get to hold or meet Petra, his newborn granddaughter, although he loved her with all his heart and anticipated the day, he would be able to love, hold and spoil her.  Petra was going to be his little "mamacita".

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard J. and Irene Lloyd, and his sister, Helen Lloyd. Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Maria G. Lloyd, and their loving children: Sarah (Adam), Emily (Pete), and son Michael. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Charlie, Oliver, Elias, Izan and Petra. Richard is also survived by his aunts Sister Willie, MCDP and Helen (Gilbert) of Galveston, his sister, Theresa (Robert) and sister-in-law Carmen (Chuck), nieces (Kathleen and Jessica) and nephews (Stanley and Andrew) and numerous extended family members, co-workers, and friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the Neurology Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital.  We appreciate all the medical explanations and the follow-ups that were given throughout our walk together during the last two weeks of Richard's life.  We would also like to send a special thank you to Dr. Elzbieta McMurtrie, her staff and Martha from DaVita for all their help treating Richard's kidney issues.
