On the morning of May 1, 2022, Raul Vasquez was called home to God at the age of 69. For over two years, Raul fought cancer with courage, good humor, and dignity. He passed peacefully in his sleep with the love of his life, Deborah, next to him.
Born on November 5, 1952 on the South Side of San Antonio, Raul was a proud graduate of Burbank High School, where he was captain of the football team. A 1970 profile in the San Antonio Light described him as an "outstanding sportsmen" and "exemplary student" who worked nights to defray family expenses. Raul graduated in 1971 and joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1972. He worked there until his retirement in 2015 and was a respected member of the American Postal Workers Union.
Burbank is also where he met Deborah Peña. They were married in 1975. Over the years, they shared a passion for sports, music, films, and art. They loved watching movies at the Bijou and traveling to see their favorite bands. They made an annual visit to Dallas to watch the Cowboys and were avid fans of the Spurs, UT Longhorns, and UTSA Roadrunners.
Raul was known to return home from running errands with his truck full of antiques from the flea market. He filled their homes with all the pottery, records, sports memorabilia, and vintage signs he could get away with.
Above all, Raul was a dedicated husband and father. He spent every free moment he had with he and Deborah's children, Alec and Talia. He worked early shifts so he could be there when they got home from school, and they'd spend their afternoons visiting interesting spots around the city and joining Mom for her lunch breaks. Raul and Deborah worked hard to send their children to St. Paul Catholic School, Antonian High School, and then on to the University of Texas at Austin.
Those who knew Raul say he was quick to laugh and even quicker to make you laugh. He was intelligent, kind, and perceptive, with a deep, gentle voice that made you want to listen.
Raul joins his mother and father, Hortensia and Fidel Vasquez, his sister, Mary Riojas (Gregory, deceased), and his mother-in-law, Constance Peña in eternity. He'll also be welcomed by his friends Roy Saenz, Diana Rangel-Duncan, Virgilio Cortez, Al and Belinda Couvier, Linda Guerra, Lilly Brown, and Jacob Hernandez. We're hopeful the family's grouchy but lovable chihuahua, Xochil, will also be there.
He is survived by his dear wife Deborah, devoted children Alec Vasquez (fiancée Christina Romero) and Talia Rader (Leonard), siblings Norma Sirmans (Randall), Fidel Vasquez, Teresa Vasquez, Elizabeth Tristan (Richard). He is also survived by his father-in-law Lionel Peña and Deborah's siblings Lionel Peña Jr., Phillip Peña (Teresa), Ronald Peña, and Sandra Inclan. Raul will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and Godchildren as well as countless friends.
