Raul M. Perez, age 76, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and compadre passed away at home surrounded by his family, Sunday morning, January 7, 2024. Raul is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores (Rivera); sons, Raul Jr. (Alice), and Michael Anthony (Regina); grandchildren, Jeremy, Isabela and Omar; siblings, Diana, Alicia, Victor, Rene, Robert Jr, and Miguel Angel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roberto B. Perez and Bertha (Maldonado); brothers, Hector, Henry and Edward.
Raul was married for 54 years and was a devoted family man. He took great care of his wife through several hospitalizations and illnesses. Raul raised two sons teaching them valuable lessons about hard work and always offered his assistance with anything that they needed. He adored his three grandchildren and always enjoyed his time with them.
Raul was born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 28, 1947. He attended Burbank High School and was the oldest of ten children. From an early age, Raul worked in the family business, Perez Molino, where he worked the commercial tortilla machine, made menudo in a pot larger than himself, and placed cow heads in the large steamers in the back. He was a United States Army Vietnam Veteran. He was wounded in combat from a grenade attack and received a Purple Heart. While serving he was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and multiple Sharpshooter Badges.
After his military service, Raul worked as a sewing machine mechanic at the Levi Strauss plant in San Antonio until 1983. He continued his civil service at the US Postal Service as a Letter Carrier until he retired in 2002. Raul lived out the USPS motto that "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." You could always count on him to be on-time, keep his word and to take his responsibilities seriously in every part of his life.
In retirement, Raul enjoyed taking care of his yard and chatting with his neighbors while enjoying the sunshine. Raul's friendly and respectful personality will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends.
