Obituary

Paul Gergen, age 93, was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and passed away in San Antonio, Texas on July 20, 2026.  He was the devoted husband of Barbara for 68 years and a loving father to his five children.

He graduated from Marquette University and Marquette Law School, and then started a career in banking as a loan officer.  Because of God's gifting him to be a visionary, his career progressed to leading several banking institutions.

Community service was a big part of his life.  He served on or led numerous Church and civic committees throughout his lifetime.  His most impactful civic accomplishment was being chairman of the Kenosha Chrysler Transition Team, helping thousands of displaced workers in Kenosha, Wisconsin after Chrysler closed its assembly plant.  This led to him being named Kenosha's 'man of the year' in 1989.

More importantly, he was deeply committed to serving Catholic organizations.  One of his favorite endeavors was serving on the Board of Directors of Catholic Family Radio.

What most defined Paul was his devotion to his Catholic faith.  This included pilgrimages to Fatima, Lourdes, Rome, and other shrines in Europe. He loved the Holy Mass, the Holy Rosary, and adoration of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.  He and Barbara ran the ministry of Eucharistic Adoration in Arkansas for a period of years.

Paul and Barbara were also very generous to helping Catholic Charities, providing aid not only in the US but also abroad.  Several charities dear to their hearts included the Universal Living Rosary Association (ULRA), Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey ("Clear Creek Monastery" in Oklahoma), the Indian Mission Society (IMS), Camp Vista in Wisconsin, and the Alexander House, a marriage ministry based out of Bulverde, TX.

He faithfully cared for his wife Barbara in her final years who passed into the next life in November of 2024.  Paul is survived by 5 children: Jean Marie Schwartz, Bill Gergen and his wife Julie, Joseph Gergen, Mary Clare DeGroot, Julie Kiyabu and her husband Scott, 14 grandchildren, one of whom is named after his grandfather, and 4 great-grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by all.
