Obituary

It is with great sorrow that the family of Paul M. Amaya Jr. share that he has gone to rest with the Lord on Ash Wednesday, March 5. 2025 in his home at the age of 71. Paul was born July 3, 1953 in San Antonio, Texas to Pablo Amaya and Mary Louise Vargas Amaya. Paul proudly graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1971. He worked for VIA Metropolitan Transit as a Full-Time Bus Operator for 34 years before retiring in September 2015. Paul was a proud member of the One Million Mile Club and the ATU Local 694.

Paul was a dedicated family man. He married the love of his life, Pat, in 1979. They started their family in 1983. Paul worked long hours to provide a home and show his 3 beautiful children what hard work and a strong will can do. As his children grew he demonstrated his commitment by coaching multiple sports and assisting with activities at St. Margaret Mary's. Anyone that attended those games may recall hearing his enthusiastic spirit from the sidelines.

Paul had a love for the Spurs and baseball which can be attributed to his late father, Pablo Amaya Sr. He appreciated being able to share this love with his children and grandchildren. Paul's attachment to his family ran deep. He had a special bond to his grandmother, Mary G. Vargas, who referred to him as her "Tesoro de Oro". It was only fitting that the bond that he had with his own grandchildren would not only equal but exceed his expectations. Paul's grandchildren, Paul "Max" IV and Luke, provided him with the strength and determination to carry on. He took pride in nurturing their passions and always made an effort to be present in their lives in numerous ways whether in person or via facetime.

Paul's faith and will remained strong throughout his battle with multiple myeloma. His sense of humor and desire to stay connected with loved ones could not be deterred. He remained in contact with friends and family through phone calls and social media.

Paul showed how much he cares in so many different ways to so many different people. Whether you had an inside joke with him or a nickname from him or you heard a song that he would share he let you know what was on his mind. Paul cared deeply for everyone he knew and he displayed it the way he knew how… with his whole heart and nothing less.

Paul is survived by his devoted loving wife, Patricia "Pat" (Gutierrez) Amaya, his children Lisa Amaya, Vanessa Amaya (Jeremiah Martinez), Paul M. Amaya III. He is a beloved grandfather to Paul "Max" Amaya IV and Luke J. Amaya. They were his strength and light during this time.

He is also survived by his mother, Mary Louise Vargas Amaya; his sister Liz Amaya Tovar (Jerry Tovar) and their children Gregory, Eric (Izzie) and Michael Tovar; his sister Terry Amaya Montez and her children, RoyJohn and Evelyn; his aunts and uncles Eleanor (Bob) Gray, JoAnn (Raymond) Ramon and Jesse Morales; his uncles Carlos, Ernest, Johnny and Jesse Vitela; his aunts Valentina Weatherspoon, Eloisa Chavez, Maryann Cisneros. He had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, Pablo M. Amaya Sr; his grandparents Louis E. and Mary G. Vargas; Jose and Angelina Vitela Sr.; his uncles, Tomas, Simon and Pedro Amaya, Joe Vitela Jr; his aunts Mary M. Amaya and Socorro Castillo.
