Obituary

Olivia E. Castillo, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Olivia was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 15, 1927 to Raul Garza and Isabel Partida Elizondo. Her mother passed when she was only five years old, so she was raised by her grandmother Margarita Esquivel Olvera, whom she lovingly called Mamá. She later attended Fox Tech High School.

On June 1, 1946 she married Jose V. Castillo and had one son. She worked for over 30 years as an optician at Texas State Optical, and as a gifted businesswoman, she built a successful rental property business from the ground up. She had a great devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and was active with the Brown Scapular Society at Little Flower Shrine for many years.

She was one of a kind: fiercely independent, incredibly witty, and generous with her time and advice to her friends and family. Even in her later years as a resident at Morningside Assisted Living, she entertained the staff and a steady stream of visitors with songs and stories of her life. Her sweet tooth was insatiable, and she was always quick to share a candy or break a pan dulce in two. Olivia will always be remembered for her strength, her tenacity and her deep devotion to the family that loved her so much.

She was preceded in death by her mother Isabel Partida Elizondo and her father Raul Garza Elizondo, and former husband Jose V. Castillo.

Olivia is survived by her son: Jose E. Castillo and wife Monica; grandchildren: Jose and Cristina Castillo; cousins Evangeline Chavez, Adolf Arceniega, Laura Luera, and many beloved extended family members and friends.

The family would like to express sincerest gratitude to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living and Mesa Vista Health Center for the love and compassion they provided to Olivia while in their care.
