Obituary

Michael "Shawn" McCullough
September 21, 1968 – January 16, 2025

Michael Shawn McCullough, 56, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away on January 16, 2025. He was born on September 21, 1968, at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia, to Lt. Col. Michael Dale McCullough and Mary Kay McCullough.

Shawn was always reading, learning, and inventing. He was constantly on the bleeding edge of science and technology. He was a musician of electronic music, an author, an inventor, a game developer, and a brilliant thinker. He had a deep love for film, science fiction, and old radio shows, creating several websites over the years to share his enthusiasm for these subjects and any other fascinating things he saw in the universe. He was moved by the curious nature of humanity and held a deep devotion to his Catholic faith.

One of his favorite films was Koyaanisqatsi, which means "life out of balance" in the Hopi language, and was scored by Philip Glass. Reflecting on it, he once wrote:

"There is something fascinating about watching machinery, Twinkie assembly, people, cars, bingo players, and mall patrons move in slow motion, fast motion during night and day. Rockets launch, skylines grow, and buildings fall in stark contrast with Grand Canyon flyovers, poverty, and sadness. You will feel connected with humanity."

That was who Shawn was—seeing everything all at once. He took a million threads and wove them through the lives of his family, his friends, and his community, intertwining his connectedness with ours. These threads remain with us, allowing us to forever hold in our hearts the magic he created and the light of his life that we will dearly miss.

Shawn was preceded in death by his father, Michael Dale McCullough. He is survived by his mother, Mary Kay McCullough; his sisters, Maureen Rasmussen (Matt) and Kathleen McCullough (Melissa); his children, Kyrianna Stacy (Anthony), Ryan McCullough, and Kristen McCullough; and his beloved grandchildren, Charlee and Desmond. He also leaves behind his nieces, Colleen and Lauren, as well as his great-nephew, Crew.

He was deeply loved, and we only wish the entire world could have known the remarkable human we were privileged to call brother, father, son, and friend. Shawn's presence will continue to be felt in the music we hear, the stories we share, and the lessons he passed down. He left a lasting imprint on all of us, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
