Obituary

Michael David Gilsdorf, age 90, was called home to be with his Lord on November 5, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, where he resided with his wife of 68 years, Marjorie White Gilsdorf.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 3, 1935, to Henry R. and Thelma Yates Gilsdorf, David attended St. Ann's Grade School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1953. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Mary's University in 1956—a foundation that nurtured his lifelong love of language, learning, and reading.

On April 27, 1957, David married Marjorie A. White at Assumption Chapel at St. Mary's. Their marriage was one of steadfast faith, commitment, and grace, and together they raised seven children. The young couple began their married life in New York City, where David pursued a career in the insurance industry with Globe Life. After a few years in the Northeast, they returned home to Texas, settling first in Dallas and later in San Antonio. David concluded a distinguished 40-year career as an insurance broker with Alexander & Alexander, remembered for his professionalism, integrity, and strong work ethic.

David's greatest joy, however, was his family. He was a devoted husband and father who found fulfillment not in accolades but in presence—at ballgames, choir concerts, marching band performances, and graduations. He was a steady and loving provider, deeply proud of his children and grandchildren, and he took every opportunity to cheer them on, encourage their efforts, and celebrate their accomplishments. Always home for dinner each evening, he led by example, showing his family that faith, hard work, and love were the foundations of a good life.

A man of deep and abiding faith, David led his family to Mass every Sunday—whether at home or while traveling. His Catholic faith guided his life and his service to others. He was an active parishioner at both St. Luke's and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Churches, where he served in numerous ministries, including the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, ACTS Retreats, Men's Club, and the Homebound Ministry. He was also a proud Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

David possessed a sharp intellect and an unquenchable curiosity. He loved books, history, and word games, and was the undisputed champion of Trivial Pursuit at family gatherings. Ever the teacher at heart, he delighted in helping his children with their homework and even volunteered in his daughter Martha's fourth-grade classroom, where he captivated her students by reading books to them.

David is survived by his wife, Marjorie White Gilsdorf; their children Julia (Frank) Ramirez, Mark Gilsdorf, John (Karen) Gilsdorf, Michael David Jr. (Patrice) Gilsdorf, Mary (Scott) Armstrong, Katherine (Brian) Seastrunk, and Martha (Mansour) Heidari; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved grandson, Matthew Gilsdorf.

The family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers Joanna, Jenna, and Patrice with Care With Dignity for their compassionate care given to their father in his final months.
