Obituary

Michael Jerome Finger, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and decorated military officer, passed away on September 16, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on April 21, 1944, in his hometown of San Antonio. His life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.

Mike's journey through life was marked by milestones that painted a picture of a man who embraced every challenge with determination and grace. In 1953, he met his classmate and future wife, Sandra Kay Ullrich, in the 4th grade at St. Mary Magdalen's Catholic School in San Antonio. Their bond grew stronger over the years, leading to their marriage on August 12, 1967 and culminating in a union that spanned 56 years.

Together, Mike and Sandy welcomed five children into their loving home. Michelle, Mike, Melissa, Matt, and Meg were the center of their lives, and their family grew with the addition of grandchildren: Richard Jr., Sophia, Clare, Andrew, Greta, Francesca, Michael III, Ingrid, Hannah, Irene, and Oliver. Mike was a devoted family man, and his love and guidance will forever live on in the hearts of his family.

Mike's dedication extended to his country, as he proudly served in the United States Army. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1962. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from St. Mary's University, San Antonio, and in 1969 was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the United States Army. He soon transferred to the Finance Corps where his service took him around the world including assignments in Colorado Springs, Bangkok, Indianapolis, Syracuse, Monterey, Riyadh, San Antonio, Norfolk, Tampa, Stuttgart, and El Paso. Mike earned several military awards, including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon for Overseas Service. His time in the military was marked by excellence and a steadfast commitment to his duty.

After 26 years of honorable service, Mike retired from the Army in 1994. Following his retirement, he began a new chapter of service, this time to St. Matthew's Catholic Church and School, where he served as the Finance Director for 22 years and as a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan. His dedication to the church community was evident in every task he undertook.

Mike was not only a man of duty but also a lifelong learner. He earned an MBA in Comptrollership from Syracuse University, studied Arabic at the Saudi Language Course in Monterey, California, and graduated from both the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, and Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

In his personal life, Mike cherished the memories of his family gatherings, especially enjoying traveling, with visits to Asia, Europe, the Middle East along with his yearly trip to South Padre Island. He will be remembered for his wisdom, his unwavering love, and his commitment to those he held dear.

Michael Jerome Finger was preceded in death by his parents, August Christian Finger and Thelma Wilson Finger, his brothers, Marc Finger and August Finger, Jr., as well as his nephew Marc Finger, Jr., and nieces Joan Yvonne Finger and Yvonne Soucie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Kay Finger, his children Michelle (Richard), Michael (Amy), Melissa (Joseph), Matthew (Mona), and Marguerite (Matthew), his grandchildren, and his brothers, Charles Finger and Gary Finger.

The world has lost a remarkable man, but his legacy of love, service, and dedication will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Michael Jerome Finger will forever be remembered with honor and affection.
