Mary Catherine Lukawitz Zaiontz died on April 24, 2021 at the age of 100. Mary was born in 1920 in Jamaica Long Island, New York and grew up moving around New Jersey with her parents, Thomas and Stephania Lukawitz.
After graduating high school, at the start of World War II, she worked at the Picatinny Arsenal making munitions. When the Army created the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, she enlisted and was in the first group of women to serve overseas. She held a clerical position in a dental clinic in New Guinea and later in the Philippines. The WAAC was eventually changed to the Women's Army Corps and Mary served until the end of the war. She was discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where she lived for the rest of her life.
Upon graduating from nursing school, she married the love of her life, Adrian Zaiontz. Adrian had also served in the Army in the Philippines and their war-time experiences brought them together although she never let him forget that she outranked him. They were married for 71½ years.
She is survived by her husband Adrian and her five children Kathryn Ann (Patrick), Patricia Lee (Kenneth-deceased), Edwin Joseph (Mary Louise), Barbara Lucille (Ray), and Sharon Jean (Bob), five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
