On June 7, 2025, Mary Louise (Ayala) Ramos, age 81, died peacefully in her home where she had been cared for by her hospice team, her long-time caregiver, Juanita Salazar, and her doting husband, Bernardo Ramos. For several years, Parkinson's, various surgical procedures, and the early stages of Dementia had immobilized and disoriented Mary Louise, necessitating around-the-clock assistance. After a lifetime dedicated to others, Mary Louise passed on as the recipient of the love and devotion she had for so long bestowed.
One of four siblings, Mary Louise was born and raised in Luling, Texas. While in high school, she played clarinet in the band. She loved to learn and dreamed of attending college. After graduating from Luling High School in 1961, she, instead, remained at home and started working at Carter & Company Insurance before transferring to First Federal Savings and Loan in Luling. Mary Louise eventually moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she worked for San Antonio Savings Association ("SASA"). While working in one of the SASA offices inside the Handy Andy #11 grocery store, she met her future husband, Bernardo, whom she married on June 15, 1975.
Mary Louise and Bernardo soon moved to Houston, Texas. In 1976, Mary Louise began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone (which became SBC Communications and then AT&T) as an executive level secretary in the Human Resources Department. She retired 29 years later so she could provide constant care for her aging mother, Maria Ayala. For years, Mary Louise and Bernardo had opened their home to Maria, and Mary Louise's sister, Irene, with whom they lived until their deaths.
Although she never gave birth to her own children, Mary Louise loved many as if they were her own. Mary Louise cherished her nieces and nephews who remember her warm embraces and tear-filled goodbyes. With always more love to give, Mary Louise and Bernardo welcomed into their lives and home other children, including neighbors Anna Symeonidis and Alex and Ricky Ramos, whom they helped parent.
Nothing brought Mary Louise more joy than being with and caring for friends and family. She willingly sacrificed her own happiness and physical well-being for others.
Mary Louise is survived by Bernardo, her husband of 50 years; her older sister, Mary Jane Guerrero, her younger brother, Hector Ayala and his partner, Alec Luckenbach, her sisters-in-law, Janie Bustos and Terry Medina, and their respective husbands, Seferino Bustos and Rudy Medina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Maria Ayala; her sister, Irene Ayala; her in-laws, Bernardo S. and Maria G. Ramos; and her brother-in-law, Alfredo Guerrero.
