Mary Socorro Flores went home to God on March 25, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Elvira Sierra; and her brothers Ruben and Raymond Sierra. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, José A. Flores; her son Joseph Michael Flores (Diana); Loretta Marie Flores (Eddy); and Arthur Anthony Flores (OMIs); 3 grandchildren: Joseph, Natalie, and Stacy; and 5 great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Roy, Aniya, Mason, and ?? (due in August, 2017) ); sister, Sr. Jo-Michele Sierra, SSCJ; brothers, Michael and Arthur Sierra; numerous nephews and nieces.
Mary was born and raised along the banks of the San Antonio River, in the beautiful King William neighborhood. The oldest of five children, Mary helped her parents in caring for her siblings and taking care of the home. Mary was actively involved in the Hijas de Maria , a religious society of San Fernando Cathedral, which promoted devotion Mary, Jesus's mother.
After graduating from Fox Tech High School, with a certificate in cosmetology, Mary went on as an intern at Kelly Air Force Base. There she met José, and shortly after got engaged and married. For 62 years, Mary and Joe established a home and family. For Mary, a beautiful, two-part, life long career follow. She took care of her home and raised her children lovingly, instilling in them a strong devotion to the Catholic faith and love of Mary, God's mother. Mary was a strong foundation in the household, and, along with her husband, provided for the family's every need.
Once the children were off on their own, and her husband retired, Mary began part two of her life career. For eighteen years, Mary attended to children of special needs, ensuring they were safely in their bus seats, and taking them to their classes at schools throughout the Northeast Independent School District. A love for her family, and a love for children of special needs marks for Mary a lifetime of service to God, and a beautiful way of how our baptismal call bestows upon us gifts that enable us to be messengers of the Gospel. In her own quiet way, Mary wholeheartedly answered yes to God's invitation to build up His Kingdom. Mary's family invites you to join us in a celebration of her life.
