Obituary

Mary Louise Barrera passed away on April 12, 2022, at the age of 89.  Mary was the second oldest of twelve siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents Janie Guzman and Eduardo Vargas, her husband of 26 years, Rudy P. Barrera, her brothers and sisters, Eduardo Vargas, Sulema Lopez, Josephine Garcia and Robert Vargas, and her granddaughter, Michelle Perez.

She is survived by her six children, Rudy Barrera (Olga), Yolanda Castro, Leroy Barrera (Michelle), Steve Barrera (Rosie), Joann Nanez (Raul) and Edward Barrera, and her grandchildren, Melissa Barrera, Edward Rodriguez, Rudy Castro, Destiny Barrera, Desiree Smith, Michael Barrera, Stephen Barrera, Sam Barrera, Emily Nanez, Jacob Nanez, Kelly Barrera and her many great grandchildren.

Mary was born in San Antonio, Texas, and married her husband in 1948. From very humble beginnings, they moved from Spring Street on the West Side of San Antonio to a home in the Jefferson area. Mary loved her house and often spoke of her joy sitting on the front porch and passing out Halloween candy or just people watching. Mary was active in a bunco club and enjoyed hosting parties for her friends. In her later years, her biggest joy was watching her six children loudly exchange stories while she sat back and listened. She also enjoyed the company of her dog, Honey.

Mary was very particular about her appearance. She had her hair done weekly at Saint Francis Nursing Home where she resided the last few years. One of her fondest memories was of her husband telling her she looked like Sophia Loren.

Mary's proudest accomplishment was her six children.  Three of her sons - Rudy, Leroy and Steve - served their entire careers in the San Antonio Police Department. Her daughter, Yolanda, retired from a career as a Registered Nurse, and daughter Joann was with the Department of Defense for 37 years. Her youngest son is a Licensed Electrician and was Mary's primary caregiver in her later years.

The family is very grateful to Saint Francis Nursing Home and the many staff members that cared for Mary.

Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, May 2, 2022, at 9:00am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Francis Nursing Home, 630 W. Woodlawn, San Antonio, Texas 78212, in memory of Mary.
