Obituary

Marian "Jeanne" Stone left us, physically, sometime in the late afternoon of Tuesday, January 23, peacefully in her sleep. Despite her mortal body being gone, her spirit and light remain with those who knew her and loved her.

Jeanne was born on a warm and sunny November 4, 1944, in Travis (now Austin), Texas. Her mother, Marian Lois Dippel, was the daughter of a Ringling Brothers Circus clown. Marian was raised, first with relatives, and later in foster care. (She was rumored to have been Miss Coca Cola at one time.) Jeanne's father, Henry Stone, was a contortionist for traveling carnivals. With that unusual lineage, it's no small wonder that Jeanne grew up to be the uniquely colorful and remarkable character who joyfully decorates our memories.

Henry Stone passed away while Jeanne was still a toddler, and a few years later, her mother remarried. From this union, Jeanne gained two half-sisters, Joan and Lori. Jeanne's stepfather was in the military, and the family moved around quite a bit. Jeanne attended three high schools (two in San Antonio), ultimately graduating in Kearney, Nebraska, in 1962.

Not long after graduation, the family returned to San Antonio. Soon after, Jeanne would discover one of the great delights of her life, and something that would remain important to her all of her days—the four lads from Liverpool… the fab four… the Beatles (particularly and primarily John Lennon). She became involved with the fan club and began a lifetime of curating memorabilia. When the Beatles toured the U.S. in 1965, Jeanne used some inheritance money to charter a bus to take her fellow fan clubbers with her to see them play live in Houston.

Jeanne's collecting obsessions added an additional focus in 1966 with the premier of the original Star Trek series. She became infatuated with the Vulcan, Mr. Spock. Over the years since, she would amass world-class collections of Beatles and Star Trek items.

Full of energy and always creative, Jeanne was a member of the SASA choir for many years. She was also a talented artist who especially loved macrame and jewelry making. She was a fixture—whether taking classes or assisting the instructor—at the San Antonio College jewelry studio during the 70s and 80s. For a number of years, she maintained a booth down at the Starving Artist Show, an annual event at La Villita.

Jeanne found herself working at various financial institutions in San Antonio. In 1974, while working downtown, she would frequent the Newsland Bookstore, where the clerk, one 18-year-old Abel Treviño, fell in love with her at first sight. He pestered her until she finally agreed to go out with him. He remembers she invited him over to her house to cut her grass, despite the fact that he had no lawn mower, nor had he ever even mowed a lawn. Still, he went over and never left. They eventually married in 1994.

Jeanne went to work at Brock's Bookstore, a beloved San Antonio institution, in 1976. She remained employed there, full- or part-time, until its closing in 1987. Customers remember her as that effervescent sprite who seemed to know not just everything they had in that bookstore of countless tomes, but where they all could be found.

Great lovers of animals, Jeanne's and Abel's "children" over the years were their many beloved pups: Echia, T'sari, Mitra, Budgie, Elric, Dejah, Buster, Mavra, Frankie, Diamond, Greta, and Spanky; and cats, including King, Toth, and too many others to name.

In their later years together, Abel would dote on her and dedicate himself to making her happy and comfortable.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her mother, Marian, in 1983. She is survived by the love of her life—her husband and partner of nearly fifty years, Abel Treviño; and half-sisters Joan Wallace (Larry) and Lori Adams; pups Johnny and Jackie; and cats Jude, Mimi and Lucy. She also leaves behind countless friends, who would all tell you they never knew anyone else like her.
