Maria del Socorro Cano entered fully into the presence of the Lord on June 8, 2023, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Andrew G. Cano; daughters, Cynthia (CR), Magda, Marcella (d. James), Teresa (Keith); grandchildren: Andrew, Natalie, Lauren, Steffen, John Matthew, Phillip, Andrew Jared, Marisela, Geoffrey, Anna, and six great grandchildren. Socorro is also survived by her brother Fernando Gonzalez Rios, niece Maria Elvia Gonzalez, nephews Fernando Gonzalez and Jose Andres Gonzalez, all of Mexico City. She was preceded in death by parents Natalia and Jose Gonzalez of Monterrey, Mexico, sister Bertha Cantu of Mexico City, brother Jose Gonzalez of Hermosillo, Sonora, and son-in-law James E. Gutierrez.
Socorro was born June 17, 1928, in Monterrey, Mexico to Natalia and Jose Gonzalez, and spent a loving childhood growing up in the view of the Cerro de la Silla in el barrio de La Purisima. Prior to Andrew serving in the Korean War, Socorro promised her heart to him. Upon his return, they were married in 1953 in Monterrey, Mexico. They celebrated 70 years of love and devotion to each other in the eyes of God. After honeymooning in Corpus Christi, Socorro started her new life in San Antonio. She successfully navigated a new language, different cultural customs, and being far away from her family.
Socorro became a loving wife, and wonderful mother to four beautiful daughters. She encouraged and supported Andrew and her daughters throughout their education and into their careers. She spent many happy years with Andrew travelling the United States, Europe, and Asia and enjoyed sharing her photographs of their adventures together. She had a special interest in photography and always looked for just that right shot when taking pictures of her family. She was a loving grandmother who doted on her grandchildren especially at Easter time with huge Easter baskets. But most of all she instilled the love of our Lord with her family.
