Obituary

Maria Del Refugio Guerra

1925-2019

On the 5 th of September, 2019, Maria Del Refugio Guerra shuffled off her mortal coil and joined her beloved Maker.  At the age of 94, she died at peace in her home of 70 years.

Born on a cool, breezy Spring day in East Donna, Texas, Cuqui (as she was fondly known to her friends and relatives) entered this world.  The adopted daughter to Crescencio Rios and Maria Ana Tanguma from San Benito, Texas where she was raised and graduated from High School before moving to San Antonio, Texas.

Having worked for decades with the Oblate Missionaries out of the offices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio, she became a world traveler and loved to share her experiences of the times she spent in Tenochtitlan, Egypt, and Lourdes visiting sacred sites.

Her time working in Civil Service at Fort Sam Houston afforded her many opportunities to make close friends with co-workers and share travel experiences.

She fulfilled a life-long dream when in May, 1985 she graduated with an Associates Degree in Social Work from San Antonio College.

The last remnant of her generation of Guerra's, she is survived by numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, care-givers, and countless friends, principal among them being Sabina, Sylvia, Susie, Sofie, Joe, Mary Helen, Col. Faith Frank, Sylvia S. Rivera, Rachel Mendoza, and Eliazar,Jr. (Maco).

A special thanks to Benjamin Saenz who was friend, companion, and care-giver before his death 3 years prior.

The family wishes to express eternal gratitude to Sylvia S. Rivera, RN for her compassionate vigilance over these last several years, providing unparalleled care, patience and love; becoming Cuqui's friend and companion.

Thanks go out to all those friends and acquaintances who reached out to Cuqui regularly via correspondence and telephone; especially, during her last years when her mobility outside her home was limited.
