Obituary

Our beloved mother, Maria Mery, went to be with the Lord our Savior on August 12, 2024, just 35 days shy of her 99th birthday. Born September 16, 1925, in McAllen, Texas to Kalil and Sada Mery, she was the 6th of 10 children, all of whom were born at home.   At her birth, her parents were undecided on a name for her. The priest suggested "Maria" in honor of the Blessed Virgin. Surely that was a divine sign from heaven as Mom grew to be extremely devoted to the Blessed Virgin her entire life.

On November 25, 1945, at the age of 20, she married the love of her life, our father, Joseph Karim Mery. They were blessed with 11 children and enjoyed 68 years of marriage before Dad passed away on April 9, 2014. Mom was love personified. She lived her life in unselfish service to others, whether that be her husband, her children, other relatives, friends, and even strangers. She was very compassionate and regularly would reach out to others whom she sensed needed comfort and companionship. By doing so, she taught us compassion and love, not only for our family members, but for others as well. She was fun to be around and had a great sense of humor. She took great pleasure in spending innumerous hours visiting with family and friends and enjoying a hearty laugh with them. She was blessed with a full and rewarding life. We are eternally grateful that we were able to enjoy her loving spirit for almost 99 years. We will miss her dearly.

Mom was preceded in death by our father, Joseph Mery, son, Richard Mery, and sons-in-law Roger Hill and John Gilderseeve. She is survived by her sister, Janie Ashmore; sister-in-law, Samira Mery; 10 children, Ron Mery and wife Sheila, Renee Rutledge and husband Tony, David Mery, Janice Gildersleeve, Geraldine Reid and husband John, Eric Mery, Diane Palasota and husband Joseph, Jackie Hill, Meladdie Magaro and husband Steve, and Dwayne Mery, as well as 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who all lovingly call her "Sito".

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. George Maronite Catholic Church in her honor.
