Maria Mercado, daughter of Elena Perez and Toribio Mercado, was born on November 23, 1918 and died on October 18, 2015. Her life was spent in loving service to others. She received her diploma in nursing from Santa Rosa Hospital in August, 1941, and was certified by the Board of Nursing Examiners in November, 1941. Upon retirement in 1981, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word thanked and recognized Maria for 40 years of continuous service, her tremendous contribution to the health care of our community, particularly in Santa Rosa's Surgical Department, and "for having been instrumental in making a small Catholic Hospital into one of the largest Catholic Medical Centers in the country." Maria was not only a devoted daughter, but also a loyal sister and generous aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She was a special friend of a number of Sisters of Charity who were her colleagues and of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns. Each of her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews has a favorite story or memory of "Aunt Mary" who always took a lively and active interest their lives.
