Maria de los Angeles "Lita" Flores was born on August 7, 1928 and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
Lita was preceded in death by her parents Miguel H. and Martina G. Flores; siblings Guadalupe Herrera, Miguel R. Flores, Jose A. Flores, Delfino C. Flores, Arturo J. Flores and Rogelio E. Flores. Survivors include countless nieces, nephews and extended family.
As the eldest in a household of seven rambunctious siblings who doled countless antics, that would test anyone's nerves, she learned to keep composure and hone her sharp witted humor. Lita attended Saint Mary's Hall and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake High School.
Lita's first job was at Zales Jewelers on Houston Street. Her technical skills including typing 120 wpm and gift of communication were key to her successful career with the Department of Defense. She worked 33 years with the Directorate of Contracting and Manufacturing at Kelly Air Force Base. Lita's responsibilities directly supported general officers and their staff to manage worldwide logistics for Air Force aircraft and weapon systems. She retired in 1984 and worked ten additional years as a secretary at Saint Luke's Catholic Church.
Although Lita remained single her entire life, she emulated a caring, almost matriarchal umbrella to countless nieces, nephews and extended family. She took an active interest in their lives, always ready with a listening ear and offering cool-headed wise guidance. She never hesitated to offer even extended stays in her home at pivotable times in their lives. Lita also took it upon herself in the early 1960's to take her 12-year old niece Dolores, to England to get acquainted with her late mother's extended family.
Known for her generosity beyond her means, she never held back her giving heart. In her Windcrest home, she carried the decades-long Flores family tradition of hosting Christmas Eve. The tradition included Catholic Mass with 50 or more people and was followed by homemade tamales, rice and beans with Lita's signature serrano salsa. Other social gatherings Lita hosted included her cheese enchiladas topped with potatoes and chicken mole, which were family favorites.
Generous to a fault, Lita readily transported a car full of nieces to the movies, refined restaurants, and other places. She even took them on vacations including Mexico.
Lita loved her pets, movies, travel, reading, novelas and filling the bird feeders. Her dietary favorites included watermelon, mangos, bolillos with refried beans and crispy bacon, breakfast tacos and ice cream. But what she treasured most, was time with family.
Lita's passing marks the last of her exceptional generation. Survivors have much to aspire to honor her life's impact.
The family would like to thank all who reached out with kind words of comfort, prayers and visits during Lita's declining health. We also thank all those who cared for Lita at Golden Age Home Care and VITAS Healthcare.
