Margaret Ann Pina was born on May 10th, 1943 in Aransas Pass, Texas and died on January 18th, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 79. She was the first daughter of Carlos Everett Olivarez (Army Veteran) and Cresciana Diaz DeLeon-Olivarez (Nurse & Homemaker); oldest sister to Juana, Veronica, Yvonne, Sandra & Domingo. When her mother died, Veronica became part of Margaret's family at 14 years of age.
She is survived by devoted husband of 58 years, Dr. Manuel Pina Jr; children Manuel Carlos Pina, Manufacturing Facility Engineer (and wife Cynthia), Maurice Jose Pina, High School Teacher and Coach (and wife Angela), Maria Pilar Pina, Psychotherapist and LCSW; grandchildren, Carlos Luis Pina (and wife Barbara), Jonathan Manuel Pina and Melissa Isabel Pina; sister-in-law, Gloria Pina; nephew Peter Pina (and wife Priscilla, son Matthew Pina) and many other loving nephews, nieces and cousins.
Margaret's parents died in her early years of life, her father in service to our country during WWII when she was 2 years of age and her mother died when she was 22 years of age. She lovingly proclaimed her father-in-law, Manuel S. Pina and mother-in-law, Maria T. Pina as her treasured parents that she was gifted with in this lifetime.
Margaret received her Bachelor's Degree in the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry) and Master's in Education from Our Lady of the Lake University. She was a High School Science Teacher at Burbank High School, Dwight Middle School and Holmes High School. Then a High School Guidance Counselor at Holmes High School, James River High School (in Virginia), Midlothian High School (in Virginia), Kennedy High School, Rhodes Middle School and Burbank High School, devoting her life to supporting the actualization and advancement of the youth in her community against the often unbearable barriers they faced.
Margaret truly lived a life devoted to her family and faith. She loved hosting and cooking Sunday meals for all family both immediate and extended, fostering many traditions and rituals for family celebrations of achievements and love. She was a devoted member of many churches (San Fernando Cathedral, St. Luke's, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Virginia) throughout the years, stating her faith as a cornerstone of her peace and guidance.
She was happiest engaging in her many joys in life including, any landscaping project big or small (taught to her by her grandfather, a landscaper); time by the sea (starting with her first childhood home of Aransas Pass Texas); home improvement projects (in all family homes); and planning and encouraging her family and husband to travel whenever possible throughout Mexico and Europe.
Margaret was a brilliant and determined woman who triumphed over countless obstacles in her lifetime showing both her beautiful combination of grit and grace. She often would do just about anything she made the decision she wanted or needed to do, a trait she passed onto her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy and what she was most proud of in life was her love of education, family and faith. Love of her family, husband, sons, daughter, grandchildren was always her main focus in her life, which she was ever vigilantly watching, caring for and doing anything she needed to do to support her biggest love of all "her family."
