Obituary

Margaret Monita was born on April 28, 1924 in Madera, California to Mercedes Ortiz and Camilo Hernandez.  Margaret departed her loving family on March 23, 2024 at the age of 99.  She was 36 days shy of celebrating her 100th birthday. Margaret lived a wonderful life constantly surrounded by her loving family.

At the age of 8 years old, her family relocated to San Antonio, TX.  This included her father, mother and three older brothers. Margaret's three older brothers were Sirilo, Tony and Joe Hernandez.  At the age of 12, Margaret's father, Camilo, was in a work-related accident and tragically passed away. At this very young age, Margaret and her brothers had to assist with financially supporting the family. During high school, Margaret began working at Solo Serve in downtown San Antonio. She graduated from Fox Tech High School.  While attending Fox Tech she met the love of her life, Martin Monita. On February 16, 1945, Margaret and Martin would become husband and wife.  They were married before God at San Fernando Cathedral. They were blessed with 37 years of marriage and 4 children.

Margaret and Martin decided to move their young family to the Southside of San Antonio. 318 Cumberland became the family gathering place. She worked as the head bookkeeper at HEB #4 on Nogalitos and Martin worked as a Quality Control Inspector at Kelly Air Force Base. Margaret would retire from HEB in 1982 to take care of her husband. Martin would leave her side on February 19, 1982.  After Martin's passing Margaret would continue to be independent and live in the home they shared.  She became very active in her support of St. Henry's Catholic Church.  This included being a member of the Altar Society and managing the raffle ticket sales for the annual church festival. Due to her declining health and advanced age, Margaret would move in with her daughter and son in law, Martha and Remigio Ayala, at the beginning of 2020.

She is survived by their four children, Josephine Gonzales (Nelson), Martha Ayala (Remigio), Sylvia Cantu (Joe) and Martin Monita, Jr. (Velma). She was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Margaret loved all of them and always looked forward to spending time with everyone.

The family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all who have cared for our Mother and all those who have extended condolences and prayers.  Margaret will be forever loved and missed by those who knew her, especially her homemade flour tortillas and lemon meringue pies. In life and death, Margaret will always be forever in our hearts and always remembered as an honest, caring, loving and hard-working woman who always put God first.  She loved watching the San Antonio Spurs and specifically her favorite retired player, Avery Johnson.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, April 4th at 5:00pm with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00pm at The Angelus Funeral Home.  A celebration of life Mass will be offered on Friday, April 5th at 10:00am at St. Henry's Catholic Church.  Her final resting place will be alongside her husband at San Fernando Cemetery #2.
