Later he was trained in the personnel field and was promoted to Warrant Officer. Mack's first assignment, as a Personnel Officer, was at the Eighth Army Headquarters in Korea.

During Mack's 23 years of military service, he was assigned to duty in Korea, Germany, Vietnam and various installations in the United States. His military awards include two Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and numerous service awards.

In 1981, Mack earned a bachelor's degree in business from Incarnate Word College after retiring from the army. He was employed as a Director of Human Resources for various businesses in San Antonio.

Mack volunteered as a Little League Coach, an officer of the Churchill High School ROTC Booster Club, a Red Cross Disaster Relief Coordinator and a Veterans Affairs Coordinator.

Mack loved wood working, furniture refinishing, tinkering with cars and anything mechanical. He enjoyed traveling, music, games, and old Western movies.
