Lydia Zapata Rodriguez has died at home in San Antonio. She was 88 years old. Lydia spent this recent Christmas week with family and friends, sharing laughter with good company, good meals, a glass of wine and a sip of Tequila.
Lydia found joy in her family and friends, faith and work. Her dignified and stylish presence barely hid a mischievous personality that was often revealed with a wink or smile, and sometimes more. Lydia was especially proud of raising a generous and loving daughter. She enjoyed traveling and is remembered to have danced the Tango with her husband in Buenos Aires, and sang along with mariachis at her 80th birthday in New York.
Born in Lockhart to Gilbert and Vicenta (Guzman) Zapata, Lydia is survived by her daughter Rita E. "Rogie" Rodriguez, and her brother and his wife, Gilbert and Gloria Zapata. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Gloria Trevino and Oralia Rodriguez, her aunt Julia Zapata who is 102 and dear cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. Married for 58 years, Lydia was predeceased by her husband Alex Rodriguez who had a career with the SAPD and the City of San Antonio. She was also predeceased by beloved siblings Alice, Elida and Eddie and her in-laws.
For more than forty years Lydia worked as a bookkeeper in banking, retail and law. In retirement she volunteered at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in San Antonio.
Lydia lived a life full of blessings, happiness and deep human connection. As she enters into eternal life, her spirit continues to inspire kindness and joy in those she loved.
